Thien Baffle question The SawdustZone

Thien Dust Separator Design Zone

So Ive decided to go with the time tested, and very popular, Thien baffle. I recently just got of those dust collector separator lids, similar to the one below and wanted to incorporate said baffle in the design. Phils design however has the output port center of the container. The separator I got doesnt. Will that totally screw up the design?

    I also use a dust deputy on my shop vacumn with great results. When I get my old Delta 400 1hp DC set up in the new shop it is very likely to be outside and pulling through a super dust deputy. Bill Pentz reports on a Thien versus a cyclone in his results. He finds the thien good at minimizing chips into the DC but poor at getting fine dust.

    But this fine dust is really hard to quantify let alone collect. The generous space in the filter box was for a set of mini cyclone filters that I never implemented as that design got more and more complex. As for the fine dust collection problem I have noticed patches of fine dust clinging on the top of the bottom Thien plate.

    3. Buy or make an after market cyclone. This does not have the issues of just a chip separator lid, but is a lot more complicated to build than a Thien baffle, and fairly expensive to buy aftermarket.

    However, if I look at the separtor design on Phil Thiens site, the baffle is placed tight against the inlet elbow which would imply the baffle in the HFDC should be higher up in the ring, perhaps even just below the inlet. However, the Thien setup is for a shop vac with separator, not a 1 stage dust collector.

    The difference between a Thien separator on a 2HP DC, and a 2HP cyclone, all else being equal is however somewhat minimal, however the difference between a trash can lid separator like a Rockler Vortex, and a Thien separator both rigged to a 2HP single stage DC is quite large. Where you run into the big difference is with the 3 HP cyclones.
